Weakley County Schools’ "Feature Teacher" Initiative Celebrates Outstanding Educators

In an exciting new effort to recognize dedicated educators in our schools, Director of Schools Jeff Cupples has launched the "Feature Teacher" initiative which is aimed at celebrating honoring exceptional teachers who embody the district's core values of purpose, connection, and growth. This innovative program, set in motion to provide an additional avenue for showing appreciation for teachers, has already begun making waves across the county.

Under the "Feature Teacher" initiative, teachers are nominated by their school principals each month, with nominations reflecting the educators' outstanding work in their school and supporting students. These nominations are then meticulously reviewed at the district level, culminating in the selection of two outstanding teachers – one from the Pre-K through 5th-grade band and another from the 6th through 12th-grade band.

As part of their recognition, selected teachers are surprised with resounding applause and granted the honor of temporarily holding the towering 6-foot "Feature Teacher" trophy for one month. Mirroring the tradition of championship belts in sports, the concept symbolizes teachers’ exceptional contributions to education as they pass the torch to the next deserving recipient.

Two exemplary educators have been chosen as inaugural recipients of the "Feature Teacher" designation. Sharon School teacher Hannah Acuff has been selected for grades Pre-K through 5, while Martin Middle School teacher Gracie Weiss has been chosen for grades 6-12. Their commitment to their students and their embodiment of the district's core values have earned them this well-deserved recognition.

Reflecting on Gracie Weiss's selection, Martin Middle School Principal John Lifsey expressed admiration for her unwavering dedication, stating, "Gracie Weiss attacks every day with passion and enthusiasm. She ignites curiosity in all students and inspires growth in individual students who have always doubted their ability to learn. She uses data to support her planning and daily lessons. Gracie is committed to the success of every student and works tirelessly every day."

She's a dedicated advocate, ensuring her students receive a fulfilling educational experience despite daily challenges. Hannah's relentless commitment to her students' growth and well-being is truly commendable."

Furthermore, the honored teachers will receive well-deserved bragging rights and will be prominently featured in stories within the district and on social media platforms. These heartfelt tributes will showcase their inspiring work and serve as a source of connection for educators across Weakley County.

Director Jeff Cupples expressed his enthusiasm for the "Feature Teacher" initiative.

"We started this initiative because we wanted another reason to celebrate our teachers and honor them for all that they do for students and in their schools each day. Teachers are the heartbeat of our educational system, and it's essential to recognize and appreciate their tireless efforts. Nothing says ‘thank you’ like a 6-foot trophy, and we take every opportunity we can to tell our teachers how much we truly appreciate them."

Weakley County Schools is proud to be a champion in support of outstanding educators. Look for the next “Feature Teacher” in March.
